Experience a total Antarctic solar eclipse onboard Ponant’s newest polar expedition ship, Le Commandant-Charcot, in 2021.
Intrepid travellers can join luxury and polar expedition cruise company Ponant, on a truly memorable adventure next year that pairs the otherworldly setting of Antarctica with a breathtaking cosmic event. Part of the Le Commandant-Charcot inaugural season of expeditions in Antarctica, this 15-night expedition, departing Ushuaia on November 30, 2021, includes all the awe-inspiring landscapes of the White Continent as well as the chance to view a total eclipse of the sun over the pack ice.
Guests will also explore the challenging eastern part of the Weddell Sea, and discover the imposing Larsen ice shelf, home to immense tabletop icebergs, among the largest ever seen, aboard the new Polar Class 2-rated, 270-guest vessel. In addition to regular outings and shore visits in Zodiac inflatables with the expert polar expedition team and naturalist guides, there will be plenty of opportunities to take advantage of inclusive innovative activities, including hovercraft, hot air balloon and electric powered snowmobile excursions, when appropriate, providing additional perspectives of this unique landscape.
Carrying a maximum of just 270 guests, Le Commandant-Charcot is a segment-defining environmentally responsible hybrid-electric polar exploration vessel propelled by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). In addition, it provides previously unheard levels of comfort and facilities in a ship capable of reaching the geographic North Pole or deep inside the challenging reaches of the Weddell Sea.
The ship’s 2021/2022 Antarctica season also includes a 14-night expedition to Charcot and Peter 1 Islands; the 11-night Weddell Sea & Larsen Ice Shelf adventure; and a 24-night Ross Sea epic departing Ushuaia on February 15, 2022.
