Eastern Europe Discovery

Delve into Eastern Europe’s history and culture on this brand-new Golden Eagle Danube Express itinerary for 2024.

A captivating region, shaped by beauty and brutality, Eastern Europe is a fascinatingly fractured land forged from a tumultuous melting pot of ethnic diversity, epics empires, and shifting political ideologies.

Travelling aboard the beautifully appointed Golden Eagle Danube Express, guests will explore this paradoxical landscape where the decadent marvels of medieval extravagance are punctured with brutal blows of Cold-War architecture, all whilst elegantly draped in the alluring hues of cerulean skies and epic alpine ranges. With the train’s signature selection of expertly curated excursions, this exclusive new itinerary perfectly complements these sumptuous panoramas with a unique insight into Eastern Europe’s poignant past.

Aboard this 11-day voyage, train travel lovers will embark on a journey of discovery through the fabled lands of the “Other Europe”.  From the magnificent royal capital, Krakow – a reliquary to the architectural grandeur of yesteryear – the train will trace the heart-breaking history of World War II and the destructive rise and fall of Communism. With a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau and the European Solidary Centre in Gdansk, guests will gain a first-hand insight into the poignant past and remarkable grit which continues to shape the nation’s identity.

The voyage continues onto one of Europe’s most glamorous capitals, Berlin. Rising like a phoenix from the flames of resistance, Berlin’s cityscape is now a cornucopia of artisanal hotspots, resplendent Renaissance structures, and bustling bohemia. Step back to the “City of Shadows” and gain a vivid insight into the years of division, destruction, and determination which forged the brilliant Berlin we recognise today. Highlights include a visit to the East Side Gallery Berlin Wall memorial, the notorious Checkpoint Charlie, and the incredible opportunity to drive your own authentic East German vehicle (the VEB Trabant).
