The Coral Greenhouse, stage one of the Great Barrier’s stunning new Reef Museum of Underwater Art, has been unveiled in Australia.
Situated in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, on the John Brewer Reef, the Coral Garden merges reef conservation, research, and science with tourism, the arts, and Indigenous storytelling.
Envisioned by artist Jason de Caires Taylor, a global leader in underwater sculptures whose worlds have reached a global audience of over 1 billion, the Museum of Underwater Art is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and will use art to highlight one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef.
The first stage of the museum is located two hours from Townsville and shares a message of reef conservation and restoration. It is the first-ever underwater building created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who hopes to advance education and offer opportunities for scientists, marine students, and tourists to engage – either by snorkel or dive – in action-based learning and to conduct globally important research on coral reef restoration.
Jason’s North Queensland works are designed to be thought-provoking and put the health of the Great Barrier Reef front and center in the minds of all who see the Museum of Underwater Art. Stage Two on Palm Island and Stage Three on Magnetic Island are expected to be complete in 2021.
