New Look for Zambia’s Toka Leya

Wilderness Toka Leya, set in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, welcomes guests for a reinvigorated, African safari experience after all guest suites and main areas emerge from a light refurbishment.

Maintaining Toka Leya’s quintessentially Zambian style and charm, the guest suites have been refreshed and the dining areas reworked to make the most of the beautiful, natural spaces around the camp. The new deck in the main area has created an additional venue for guests’ meals, as well as a wider variety of locations from which to enjoy sundowners or dinners under the stars, while taking in the vistas over the majestic river. The addition of appealing bean bags at the beach is the perfect spot for guests to unwind during the day with a cocktail in hand. while the new swings at the guest suites are another feature designed to invite complete relaxation with a book, or just to appreciate the view.

The waters, wildlife and tranquillity of the Zambezi River inspired the design, décor and furnishings, with the colour palette and numerous pieces chosen specifically to embrace Toka Leya’s natural and cultural heritage.

Fitted with canvas walls in muted tones, the suites now offer a more spacious interior, and the new beds are adorned with flowing, drawback mosquito nets. Locally designed light fittings enhance the ambiance of each room, while block-out curtains guarantee peaceful rest. Contemporary furnishings add a modern touch, interspersed with nostalgic printed fabric artworks of Victoria Falls. The artworks – originally painted by artist Thomas Baines, who accompanied David Livingstone to the Zambezi in 1858 – bring the drama of the majestic Falls indoors. A pod swing floats above each private deck, allowing guests time out to immerse themselves in the surrounding wilderness.

Wilderness Toka Leya, set in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, welcomes back guests for a reinvigorated, African safari experience after all guest suites and main areas emerge from a light refurbishment.

To maximise the natural spaces of the camp and its remote location, the main areas have been redesigned. All furnishings have been replaced with customised décor, influenced by the surrounding Zambezi while paying homage to the local community. Bespoke Zambian basket light fittings boldly feature in the lounge and dining areas, which are now further spread out to create pockets of calm for guests to enjoy their wild surroundings.

Making the most of the expansive Zambezi views, the bar area has been relocated and enlarged. The bar itself, clad in vibrant fabric featuring a bespoke Zambezi fish design, is the ideal setting for watching an unforgettable sunset. Bean bags add a splash of colour to the beach and offer the ultimate relaxation spot on the water’s edge.

Toka Leya is a tranquil safari base from which to easily access and explore Victoria Falls and the adrenaline-filled adventure hub of Livingstone. It also offers guests many activities from camp: cruises and catch-and-release fishing, game drives, walks (subject to the availability of a walking guide) as well as back-of-house tours showcasing the camp’s successful tree-planting and other sustainability initiatives. In and around camp, guests will spot hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffalos, and a dazzling array of birds, with ‘specials’ such as the African finfoot, and seasonal migrants like the African skimmer. The camp’s uniquely situated riverside spa allows guests to wind down with its variety of wellness treatments.

“With its infinity pool, fire pit, dining and bar area, spa and gym, and supremely private suites, Toka Leya is ready to welcome many more guests to our corner of heaven.
