Ker & Downey Botswana has welcomed Maxa into its expanding portfolio, with the camp’s first guests arriving this month.
This innovative and charming camp redefines the classic Okavango Delta safari experience, offering guests a rare opportunity to explore one of the region’s lesser-known wilderness areas in the remote northeast.

Nestled beneath a canopy of majestic ebony, marula, and leadwood trees, Maxa overlooks the vibrant Maxa Lagoon. The dynamic surroundings captivate visitors—whether observing birds in the treetops, spotting hippos wallowing in the lagoon, or watching elephants approach the water’s edge. The camp’s distinctive main area, set directly on the sand, creates an immersive connection with nature that harkens back to the authentic safari camps of yesteryear.
The Maxa area, fed by strong waters from the Okavango panhandle, features clear waterways that enable exceptional mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and even potential swimming locations. Maxa embodies sustainable luxury and authentic safari experiences through thoughtful design. The camp showcases locally sourced and handcrafted furniture, celebrating Botswana’s artisanal expertise in woodwork, weaving, pottery, and more.

Design highlights include a suspended net in the trees offering stunning sunset views, elevated decks for wildlife viewing, and a central gathering area featuring a wood-fired oven where the camp chef prepares fresh bread, roasts, and pizzas—creating a warm, interactive dining experience.
The innovative natural pool, purified by water plants and biological filters, exemplifies Maxa’s harmony with its environment. These thoughtful features, along with the camp’s careful integration into the natural landscape, underscore Ker & Downey Botswana’s commitment to minimally invasive, high-impact experiences that enhance rather than disrupt the pristine surroundings.
